STAFF

Curious Creators have stepped up into multiple roles across the company this year, in line with our goal of creating stable employment and leadership opportunities for our emerging artists. Sandra May, Samantha Barahona and Amira Halabi all took the reins on the ReFill program this year, designing and delivering a beautiful multi arts program to students at Miller Technology High School. Sandra May also curated and designed the GEN2168 Festival event and the ReFILL exhibition at the WOW Festival, both with spectacular results.

FUNPARK Festival Director, Daisy Montalvo’s creative leadership and project management skills were put to the test this year and were fundamental to the huge success of the festival and overall program. Likewise, Diego Murillo has grown into the role of Social Enterprise Manager over 2022, with the program having its most successful year since 2018. Andrea Nealy is our quiet achiever! Working behind the scenes across finance, admin and evaluation, Andrea keeps the ship in order and makes sure we all get paid on time. And there are many others that have grown into their roles across the different programs and projects —taking their skills and confidence to the next level.

A huge congratulations to Samantha Barahona and Diego Murillo who welcomed Maya, a beautiful baby girl, into the world in August 2022.

Andrea Lim resigned from her role as Creative Director at the end of 2022. She has worked as a key senior staff member since early 2021, developing the creative vision and artistic program of the company, alongside her paired mentee Miranda Aguilar. Together they developed the ongoing structure of the Curious Creators Program, delved deep into ‘collective process’ through Handle With Care, piloted the new Testing Grounds and Refugee Artist Development Programs and worked closely with our Emerging Artistic Directorate. Andrea has introduced some fantastic programs and structures that we will continue to develop into the future. Fortunately, Andrea will continue to work with CuriousWorks next year in a smaller role, as lead producer and mentor on the Refugee Artist Development Program.

And finally, our CEO, Vanessa Hyde, moved on to new pastures in December 2022, after 10 years with the company. Vanessa began in the role of General Manager in 2012 and stepped up into the CEO role when we created our sister company Co-Curious five years ago. She has steered the CuriousWorks ship through various challenges and changes over the years (including COVID-19) and has done so with integrity, passion and thoughtfulness. The majority of staff met Vanessa as young Curious Creators, and we’ve all learned a lot under her guidance, mentorship and management. We wish her all the best!
