Participant reflections:

“I think CuriousWorks and PYT - they're doing an amazing job. I love how they're supporting the community. I love how they are pouring their hearts and souls and are trying to make an environment which is fair for everyone.”

“One of the best things about filmmaking is the people. And I love interacting with the people, and it's one of my favourite things coming to Fairfield every fortnight.”

“My goal initially for Curiously West is just to put myself in a position where, although it may be a bit out of my comfort zone, the idea of meeting new people and learning new skills gives my life a sense of progression and purpose.”

Curiously West Film Club (CWFC) emerged out of a desire for local filmmakers to have a space to gather, collaborate and make films.

Curiously West Film Club is a joint venture between CuriousWorks and Powerhouse Youth Theatre (PYT) Fairfield. Many filmmaking spaces are either sporadic, located in the city or distant from South West Sydney; there is a significant gap for Western Sydney filmmakers to connect with their local counterparts. Recognizing this need, CuriousWorks and PYT Fairfield have partnered with CWFC Founder, Addy Fong, to bridge this gap by establishing a dedicated and regular space for deep collaboration and connection. Originally led by Addy Fong, the partnership with PYT and CuriousWorks has allowed this initiative to go beyond one-off networking events, providing filmmakers with a consistent environment that fosters experimentation, skills development, and the nurturing of their craft.

The fortnightly sessions range from hands-on skill-building workshops, to sessions where filmmakers can watch and review films, to networking sessions, to collaborative film-making sessions. It’s a space where folks of different ages, cultural backgrounds, and levels of experience can come together out of a love for film-making.

In 2025, the cohort’s short film Waves was selected to screen as part of Made In The West Film Festival.
